DescriptionElectronic Issue is the process whereby blood is issued to a patient without crossmatching thus creating a large time saving for urgent and theatre cases. For EI to be applied, certain strict criteria must be met.
IndicationBlood required for transfusion - anaemias, high risk surgery (see MSBOS), obstetric cover, etc.
Additional InfoEI is usually allowed when a patient has had a recent G&S sample with a negative antibody screen. Major patient groups excluded from EI include those with clinically significant antibodies, sickle cell disease, positive DCT's, post allo bone marrow / stem cell transplants, post solid organ transplants and antenatal patients.
