ID:820 Cobalt (blood)
Search Links: General Info : Protocols : LabTestsOnline

DescriptionCobalt is a component of cyanocobalamin - vitamin B12 - and as such is an essential element, however there is little value in measuring cobalt for nutritional purposes. Industrially, this metal is principally used in the manufacture of high temperature alloys
Indication Usually in suspected toxicity. A small number of patients implanted with metal on metal (MoM) hip replacements develop progressive soft tissue reactions due to wear debris associated with MoM articulations. MHRA reccommends that whole blood chromium and cobalt are measured. Refer to Medical Device Alert: MDA/2012/036
