DescriptionDetection of respiratory pathogens by PCR in respiratory secretions is diagnostic for the presence of agents which may or may not be the cause of respiratory disease. This multiplex PCR detects Influenza viruses (A and B), RSV, Adenovirus, Metapneumovirus, Rhino virus, Parainfluenza viruses 1-4 and Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
Indication
Additional Info Respiratory secretions (NPA,BAL, Tracheal aspirate), nose and throat swabs are acceptable samples. Sputum will be tested on adults although swabs are preferred where upper respiratory tract symptoms predominate. . Swabs and transport media are available from Pathology Supplies team using the order form on the website. NPA is probably the best sample for young children but a nasopharyngeal swab is acceptable alternative or nose and throat swabs. Please do NOT use charcoal swabs swabs for this test. Samples must be in the laboratory before 09:30. Certain samples positive for influenza viruses may be referred to the Virus Reference Laboratory at Colindale for typing and/or confirmation.

Collection ConditionsOptimal time of specimen collection is the acute phase of illness. Pink top Copan e-swabs (liquid swabs with clear liquid) is the required transport medium. Please send separate request if MC&S is also required. Do NOT send charcoal swabs for Virology
