|Description||Food botulism is a result of ingesting food contaminated with the toxin of clostridium botulism. Clinical microbiology laboratories can diagnose the disease by botulinum toxin detection in the serum and by also detecting the organism in faecal cultures.
Vomitus, gastric washings or gut content are also suitable samples for C.botulinum investigation|
|Additional Info|| Because of the public health ramifications it is important to obtain an aliquot of the food sample for formal testing at a certified Food Microbiology laboratory.

|Concurrent Tests||Serum: At least 5ml must be collected as close to the onset of symptoms as possible. Serum specimens must be collected before antitoxin is given. Lysed or EDTA treated blood specimens are not suitable|
|Interpretation|| The sample will be referred to the reference laboratory for the detection of botulinum neurotoxin and PCR detection|
