Search Links: General Info : Protocols : LabTestsOnline

DescriptionKnown as the "strangling angel of children" diphtheria caused a high mortality and morbidity before antibiotic and vaccine era. Diphtheria antibody testing is indicated to test response to diphtheria vaccine in certain patient groups with impaired antibody responses to vaccination (e.g. congenital immunodeficiencies, Bone marrow transplant patients). The diphtheria antibody test is not recommended to diagnose acute infections with Corynebacterium diphtheriae i.e. nasal, pharyngeal, laryngeal or cutaneous. Culture of swabs or tissue should be requested for a patient with clinically suspected diptheria.
