ID:594 Sputum culture - Cystic Fibrosis patients
Search Links: General Info : Protocols : LabTestsOnline

DescriptionGiven the propensity of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) to develop complicated respiratory tract infections, samples from this patient group are analysed in more detail for pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Selective cultures are also performed for less common organisms, such as Burkholderia cepacia complex, which can cause fulminant pneumonitis in CF patients. Additional cultures for fungi, such as Aspergillus spp. are also performed routinely. Because expectorated sputum samples may be difficult to obtain, particularly from younger CF patients, cough swabs are also processed from this patient group.
