DescriptionPatients with miliary tuberculosis or immunocompromised patients who could have disseminated atypical mycobacterial infections with e.g. Mycobacterium avium complex will benefit from a mycobacterial blood culture. Investigation is by automated culture. Further identification and susceptibility testing are provided following referral to Birmingham PHL laboratory (currently the referral lab is not accredited for this test)
Indication Diagnosis of disseminated tuberculosis. Suitable for blood samples or bone marrow.

Interpretation Initial culture results will be reported as AAFB isolated with confirmation of final identification and sensitivities reported later.

Collection ConditionsAseptic venipuncture technique. If specific bottles are not available on ward at time of collection, blood or bone marrow can be collected into a lithium heparin tube and transferred to the laboratory. Do not collect into EDTA containing tubes.
