DescriptionBacillus anthrax culture is available in the region and PCR detection is available via the Special Pathogens Reference Unit at Porton Down. If you suspect a clinical case of anthrax please contact the laboratory for reasons of danger of infection. Sputum should be placed in a sputum sampling container. Please notify the health protection unit or CCDC of a clinical or confirmed case.
Additional Info From clinically or acutely illl patients, the following specimens may be sent: Blood cultures (pre-antibiotic), CSF, Tissues (in preference to swabs where possible), Respiratory samples (aspirates, sputum or pleural fluid), Fluid and Swab (Wound Swab accepted for culture only - not PCR). These samples are referred to Porton Down Rare and Imported Pathogens Laboratory (non CPA accredited)
