DescriptionIron carrier protein. Usually ferritin levels will be above 1000 ug/l in clincally established haemochromatosis. Serum ferritin is now the test of choice for diagnosing iron deficiency anaemia. Note Ferritin is an acute phase protein and may be affected by intercurrent illness. PLEASE NOTE: TEST CAN ONLY BE ADDED TO A SAMPLE WITHIN 8 HOURS OF COLLECTION
IndicationFerritin is the test of choice for diagnosing iron deficiency anaemia. Also used in Iron overload.
Additional Info**IMPORTANT NOTICE!** As of 12th September 2011 the "request intervention" system is being implemented on all haematinics tests (B12, folate, ferritin). This software program applies user-specified critieria to determine if the results of previous requests for a given patient are still valid. If any of these minimum re-test intervals is exceeded then the request is deemed inappropriate and the requested test(s) will not be performed. An explanatory comment will be included on the report stating "inappropriate request. Minimum re-test intervals on Pathology Website", together with information about the appropriate re-test interval. The following acceptable retest intervals will be used: B12 >56 days, Folate >21days, Ferritin >20 days. In cases where the requester feels that there is a genuine clinical need for a result despite the request being rejected by the system, please contact the duty officer who is able to override request intervention and allow the tests to be processed.
