DescriptionUric acid is the final breakdown product of purine metabolism in humans.
IndicationInvestigation of numerous renal and metabolic disorders including gout, myeloma, widespread malignancies, chronic alcoholism, hyperlipidaemia, drugs. Urate is a useful marker of cell damage in the tumour lysis syndrome.
Additional InfoUric acid measurement is not indicated and will not be performed on samples from patients on Rasburicase (as agreed with the CD for Haematology).

InterpretationLevels elevated in the above conditions. However, the elevation may be missed in gout due to intermittent or short lived episodes.
