DescriptionUrine samples requesting OCP will be screened using a concentration technique and examined by microscopy for the presence of Schistosoma haematobium
IndicationIn urinary schistosomiasis, very few ova are present in the urine. The number of ova in the urine varies throughout the day, being highest in urine obtained between 10am and 2pm. In patients with haematuria, eggs may be found trapped in the blood and mucus in the terminal portion of the urine specimen.
Additional InfoSterile containers without boric acid must be used. Urine should be collected into a 20ml sterile universal container over the time period between 10am and 2pm and include the terminal portion of the urine specimen Alternatively, submit terminal stream urine collected over a whole 24 hour period.
