Description Beta 2 transferrin (Tau protein) is an asialylated form of transferrin. This protein runs in the beta-2 region on protein electrophoresis. Beta-2-transferrin is present in CSF but absent in serum, therefore the detection of this protein in nasal fluids indicates that the fluid originated from the CSF.
Indication Requests usually received after trauma or surgery. Confirmation of CSF rhinorrhoea.
Additional Info Fluid samples usually received after trauma or surgery and may request Tau protein, asialylated transferrin or beta-2-transferrin.
