|Description||Only available as a tumour marker, not as a pregnancy test. Assay measures total hCG. Assay not available to A/E unless seen by Gyn SpR.
|Indication||Gonadal, extragonadal germ cell tumour marker. Also used for ? Ectopic pregnancy/threatened abortion/ ? hydatidiform mole/choriocarcinoma.
|Additional Info||In germ cell tumours the presence of trophoblastic tissue significantly increases levels. Also, measurement of AFP increases sensitivity of tumour detection. PLEASE NOTE: TEST CAN ONLY BE ADDED TO A SAMPLE WITHIN 8 HOURS OF COLLECTION|
|Interpretation||Elevated in 75% teratomas and 30% seminomas. In threatened abortion and ectopic pregnancy comparably lower levels are found for the stage of pregnancy. In ectopic pregnancy levels fail to double in 48 hrs.
