|ID:872 ||Other Bacterial culture investigations||Search Links: General Info : Protocols : Patient Info|
|Description||In addition to wounds, there are many circumstances where testing may be required for other sites.
An example of this would be an investigation of balanitis with a penile swab, or there may be devices such as IUCD which require testing. (Note that IUCDs are only processed if the patient has suspected PID or other inflammatory condition).
For specific advice please contact the laboratory (Ext 23962).
Swabs for bacterial culture should be taken using a pink E-Swab, (or if a small swab is required, an orange E-Swab), as with wound swabs.
If you are uncertain regarding what sample(s) you need to send, please contact the laboratory to seek advice.
|Indication|| Investigation of possible infection|
|Additional Info||If pus is present, please send 1ml pus in a universal container, as this is the preferred sample, rather than a swab.|
|Interpretation|| Interpretive guidance may be added to the report by the Microbiologist, if relevant.|
