DescriptionPresence of antibodies associated with neuromyelitis optica (Devic's syndrome). Only indicated for neurology patients.
Indication
Additional InfoNeuromyelitis optica is a severe inflammatory demyelinating disease that affects optic nerves and spinal cord without affecting the brain. Aquaporin 4 has been dentified a major NMO antigen. Samples received without a complete Diagnostic and Advisory Service for Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) referral form will not be referred for this test. InterpretationAutoantibodies to aquaporin-4 are found in >80% of NMO patients and around 50% of patients with longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis. They are infrequent in patients with optic neuritis without spinal cord involvement.
