|Description||Please state on request form, bromide compound patient has been exposed to.This test is no longer routinely available. Please contact the Duty Biochemist for further discussion if required’|
|Indication||Toxic exposure (or monitoring of treatment)
|Additional Info||Still used as treatment of convulsive seizures in some patients, some may develop toxicity at 5 mmol/l. Industrial bromide (e.g. fumigant methyl bromide) exposure leads to lethargy and hallucinations.
|Interpretation||Half life is 11.9 days. Different chemical forms of bromide vary greatly in toxicity. Interpretation requires knowledge of the compound the pateint has been exposed to.
