Search Links: General Info : Protocols : Patient Info

DescriptionBile acid in urine increases in hepatobiliary disease, when the liver is injured and the enterohepatic circulation of bile acids is disturbed, bile acids spillover past the liver into the systemic circulation.
IndicationSuspicion of inborn error of bile salt metabolism.
Additional InfoWhen the concentration of bile acid in blood increases, it is excreted into the urine (as it is harmful). Excretion is facilitated by sulphation - this increases the water solubility of the bile acids.
