|Description||Glucose and protein measurements are made on the fluid.
|Indication||Investigation of ascites (peritoneal effusion). Determination of transudate versus exudate.
|Additional Info||Protein levels may vary widely in ascitic fluid of cirrhotic patients.
|Interpretation||Transudates (e.g with cirrhosis or CCF) tend to have higher glucose and lower protein (< 20 g/L). Exudates (carcinoma) tend to have lower glucose and higher protein (> 20 g/L).
