Search Links: General Info : Protocols : Patient Info

DescriptionCapillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) is performed in Immunology. It involves the separation of serum proteins according to their electric charge. This is essential in the investigation of suspected paraproteinaemia / monoclonal gammopathy. Characteristic patterns are also seen in the presence of an acute phase response.
IndicationInvestigation of plasma cell dyscrasia's e.g. Multiple Myeloma.
Additional InfoNew paraproteins identified by electrophoresis are typed by immunofixation and those >3g/L are quantified. It is recommended that urine is also screened by electrophoresis.

InterpretationThe interpretation of a newly identified paraprotein depends on the type of paraprotein, size, rate of change, evidence of end-organ damage and number of plasma cells on bone marrow biopsy.
