DescriptionThe PFA 100 is an instrument and test cartridge system in which the process of platelet adhesion and aggregation following vascular injury is simulated in vitro. Platelet dysfunction detected by the PFA-100 system may be acquired, inherited, or induced by platelet inhibiting agents. The most common causes of platelet dysfunction are related to uraemia, von Willebrand disease (VWD), and exposure to agents, such as acetyl salicylic acid (ASA, for example Aspirin).
IndicationBleeding diatheses where the indication may be due to irregular platelet function.
Additional InfoUsually requested as part of a full platelet function study. See also Platelet Function Tests.
Concurrent TestsPlatelet Aggregation Studies, Platelet Glycoproteins, Platelet Nucleotides, Full Blood Count, Blood film.
Dietary Requirementsna

InterpretationIncreased closure times to both Coll/Epi and Coll/ADP cartridge would indicate a platelet function defect (results affected by low haematocrit and platelet count). Increased closure time to Coll/Epi cartridge only would indicate a drug induced platelet function defect.
