Description Tuberculosis is caused by members of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex group of bacteria including M.tuberculosis, M.africanum, M.bovis, M.bovis BCG and M.microti (these are the most common species encountered, but is not exhaustive). These closely related species differ in host range and pathogenicity but cannot be differentiated by simple PCR for detection of M.tuberculosis complex. Samples are tested using the PCR -line probe assay GenoType MTBC assay (Hain LifeScience).
Indication This assay is available following discussion with a Microbiology Consultant or Specialist Clinical Scientist. It is useful where M.bovis infection is suspected because M.bovis is intrinsically resistant to pyrazinamide. It can also be used to confirm whether infection is associated with BCG vaccination or immunotherapy.
Additional Info Specimens will require a positive M.tuberculosis complex PCR before testing to ensure sufficient DNA available for successful testing.
