Description Molecular detection of HHV6 by PCR. HHV6 species are divided into two variants. HHV-6A and HHV-6B. Primary infection with HHV-6B causes roseola infantum or exanthem subitum a common childhood disease that resolves spontaneously. After primary infection, the virus replicates in the salivary glans and is shed by saliva, it remains latent in lymphocytes anf monocytes. Not usually associated with disease in the innunocompetent, HHV-6 infection is a cause of opportunistic viral infection in the immunosuppressed, typically AIDS paitents and transplant recipients of bone marrow, kidney and liver.
Indication Consider in babies <3 months 3 years of age with high fever followed by a mild masculopapular rash. Immunocompromised / Immunosuppressed patients with bone marrow suppression, pneumonitis, encephalitis, encephalopathy, hepatitis, fever and skin rash.
