Research underpins work in our Pathology Laboratories

The Research and Development section of Pathology Services is based in the Old Medical School on the Leeds General Infirmary site and comprises a small team of staff - currently 2 clinical scientists, 2 biomedical scientists, an administrator and 2 biomedical support workers.  We have an established track record of supporting clinical trials and research projects conducted within the Leeds and Bradford hospitals and associated universities. These trials can be local, regional, national or international and initiated by either NHS/university staff or commercial companies.

There are currently approx. 150 studies in progress.

The section co-ordinates and provides a pathology testing service for these studies – this includes all pathology disciplines except Histopathology (contact Dr Olorunda Rotimi Tel: 0113 2067786 or E-mail and Clinical Genetics (contact Jeanette Srinivasa Tel 0113 39 24405 or E-mail All laboratories are CPA accredited.

A data handling service is also provided for pathology test results.  Advice is offered to researchers regarding the development of protocols, test choice for studies and logistical issues, and cost assessments can be provided.  Our staff can help your study with sample processing, storage and transport to other laboratories if required.

We are happy to meet with you to discuss ideas for research projects.

The section also supports (and provides accommodation for) laboratory based research projects within the Trust, including MSc, PhD and MD work.

There is an approval and registration process for all study work. Please contact the section for the relevant forms. Please note that non commercial studies in the NIHR portfolio will not be charged for but must still go through the approval process.
