Cellular Pathology Turn Around Times

Routine Surgical Histopathology (all sites):

86% of specimens are reported within 15 days of receipt of the specimen.

Non Gynae Cytology:

90% of specimens are reported within 8 days of receipt of the specimen.

Gynae Cytology

All specimens are reported within 2 weeks of receipt of the specimen. This is in line with the CSP guidelines.

Semenology

90% of specimens are reported within 10 working days from receipt of the specimen.

  • Complex cases and those requiring specialist procedures (eg decalcification or immuno staining) may have extended turnaround times.
  • Specimens deemed to be urgent for clinical reasons will be prioritized.
  • Verbal reports may be given by the reporting Consultant Histopathologist at MDT meetings.
  • Inadequately labelled specimens, or those accompanied by incomplete or illegible request forms may be returned to the requesting clinician. They will not be reported until the deficiencies have been rectified by the requesting clinician/health care practitioner.
