Antenatal Sampling

Current Guidelines state that ALL patients should have booking bloods and repeat samples at 28 weeks.

Samples for blood grouping (EDTA - 7ml - Pink Top, Black Ring) must be hand-written at the time of collection and must be labelled with the minimum patient identification. Labelling must include the following:

  • Surname
  • First Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Unique Identifier* - Hospital or NHS Number

* Should the Hospital or NHS number be unavailable, the patient's address is considered a suitable alternative - Applicable to antenatal samples only.

Samples from patients known to have blood transmissible viral infections should be clearly labelled "High Risk" or "Danger of Infection".

IMPORTANT: Samples not labelled as stated above WILL be rejected.
